WENDY AND LUCY (2008) – Kelly Reichardt
I went into this relatively blind and was not disappointed, if you enjoyed Nomadland, I think you would enjoy this film! It’s an authentic and candid look into a life of a “near-penniless drifter”, played by Michelle Williams, and how she copes and adapts to the situations going on around her. It’s gentle, melancholic while also heartbreaking. Much like Nomadland, it’s a look into the lives of people we don’t usually take much notice of, which is why I think these types of stories are so effective. With Nomadland being one of my favourite films, I thoroughly appreciated seeing where some of the inspiration behind the film came from, however Reichardt’s work, unlike Chloe Zhao, takes a deeper look into the ideas of the traditional “American Dream” and typical “Western” films. It does this by creating an unpleasant environment, something which was a critique from Zhao’s direction within nomad, of how it seemed to glorify a specific lifestyle portrayed. From looking into more of her work and reading articles about Reichardt and her work, it’s clear she has a thought-out perspective within her films that she tries to address. That being nuanced characters just living their day to day lives. Very much looking forward to watching more of her work, just off this one film, I already have a clear picture of who she is as a director which I love.
