Sony Pictures

Filming officially began on the third entry in “The Equalizer” franchise in October last year on the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy, with filming wrapping by January.

Star Denzel Washington and filmmaker Antoine Fuqua return to their respective jobs on the new entry that also sees Washington reunite with his “Man of Fire” co-star Dakota Fanning. Also onboard are Gaia Scodellaro, Sonia Ben Ammar, Remo Girone, Andrea Dodero and Eugenio Mastrandrea.

Beyond the casting and location work, little was known about the film’s story. All we did know was it would again follow Washington’s retired intelligence agent Robert McCall whom he played in 2014 and 2018. In addition, Richard Wenk is returning as a writer in what’s expected to be a franchise closer.

Now, Sony Pictures has released a new official synopsis for the film revealing the antagonists this time out. In the first, it was the Russian mafia led by Marton Csokas, and in the second it was McCall’s ex-defense intelligence colleagues turned mercenaries led by Pedro Pascal. This time, McCall is taking the fight to his enemy’s home turf:

Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed.

Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.

“The Equalizer 3” arrives in cinemas on September 1st 2023.
