Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erased,” “Manchester by the Sea”) and BAFTA nominee Mike Faist (“West Side Story”) have scored the lead roles in “Brokeback Mountain,” a stage production set for London’s West End from May 10th to August 12th.

Annie Proulx’s famed short story was previously adapted to the screen in 2005’s highly acclaimed Ang Lee-directed film which won multiple Oscars and was a Best Picture nominee. Its loss of the big award to “Crash” that year remains one of the most famous Oscar upsets in history.

This time though the stage production will be more directly adapting the short story as opposed to Lee’s film which took some creative liberties. It is being described as “a play with music” and will run at the Sohoplace Theatre.

The famed story follows two lonesome cowboys who fall in love in the big, wide open spaces of Wyoming. Faist will play Jack Twist and Hedges will play Ennis Del Mar, the pair taking on the Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger roles respectively from Lee’s film.

Ashley Robinson is behind the project which will boast songs by Dan Gillespie Sells. Singer-songwriter Eddi Reader will perform on stage with a country and western band, whilst Jonathan Butterell (“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”) will direct.

The 2005 film grossed $178 million worldwide off a $14 million budget and was seen as a landmark film. In 2018 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
