Out promoting “John Wick: Chapter 4,” the film’s director Chad Stahelski has previously spoken about how the main franchise is likely to have a brief rest after the upcoming 169-minute epic installment hits cinemas this coming Friday.

Whilst spin-off projects are on the way including “Ballerina” and “The Continental,” Stahelski himself appears to be stepping back and considering his potential next project. The likeliest candidate is his film version of the feudal Japan-set, award-winning, Playstation-exclusive 2020 video game “Ghost of Tsushima”.

The game follows Jin Sakai, a Samurai warrior and the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside his traditions and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

Speaking with BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast, Stahelski says the recent critical and commercial success of HBO’s “The Last Of Us” TV series has set a high bar and this is one of the few game properties that could be a major hit if handled with the proper care:

“I hope that The Last of Us shines a further light on upcoming video game adaptions. Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima I’m working on. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope come to fruition.

But Ghost… it’s got an amazing story. It’s the anti-samurai samurai movie. It’s got great thematics. We have a lot of push on that and a lot of interest because Last of Us pushing that, yes, the curse of video game-to-movie is kind of lifted.

It can be done. You’ve just got to give it love and attention. And Ghost, of probably all the other video game [movies] in development, I think that’s the one that’s going to land.”

It remains the PS4’s fastest-selling first-party original IP debut, with more than 2.4 million units sold worldwide in its first three days and over 8 million sold as of a year ago.
