Actor Mena Massoud, the leading star of Guy Ritchie’s live-action remake of beloved 1992 Disney animation classic “Aladdin,” has indicated a sequel isn’t likely to happen.

Massoud played Aladdin alongside Will Smith as The Genie of the Lamp in the 2019 remake which overcame mixed reviews to prove a major financial success with over $1 billion at the box-office.

Since then there has been murmurs of a follow-up with a report back in very early 2020 right before the pandemic indicating the studio hired writers John Gatins (“Flight”) and Andrea Berloff (“Straight Outta Compton”) to figure out the next path for the story.

Those reports suggested Ritchie was set to return, alongside Massoud, Smith and Naomi Scott. More recently Ritchie himself told Collider the other week that filming the first film was a “great experience” and he would “very much like to” make a sequel.

However, he added that in terms of progression the only thing that had happened was that they had been “kicking some ideas around”.

Now Massoud, who played Agrabah’s most famous street rat and scoundrel turned Prince Ali, has seemingly indicated the chances are slim at best. When a fan asked him about the prospect of a sequel, Massoud replied on Twitter: “Very unlikely at this point.”

Massoud made headlines after the film’s release saying he hadn’t had a “single audition” since the film was released. Since then the Egyptian-Canadian actor has popped up in films like “Run This Town” and “The Royal Treatment” and had a major role on Hulu’s “Reprisal”.

A reported spin-off for Billy Magnussen’s minor character Prince Anders was also rumored but seems to have fallen by the wayside. At last report a year ago the project was undergoing re-writes.
