After so many years of waiting, James Cameron’s “The Abyss” and “True Lies” may finally be coming home at the kind of quality those films demand.
Cameron’s epic 1989 sci-fi underwater feature and the 1994 major action-comedy are essentially holy grail titles for video collectors – films whose last official disc release were poor-quality DVD transfers over twenty years ago.
Cameron’s commitments to the “Avatar” sequels have also kept him busy in the years since. Some HD transfers have popped up on streaming services that are better than the discs, but they’re far from the proper 4K Dolby Vision disc transfer many have been calling for.
In the case of “The Abyss” in particular, the ‘Special Edition’ version (the true version of the film that’s miles better than the theatrical cut) remains locked to that old DVD.

Well today comes an update directly from Cameron’s go-to producer Jon Landau. The Digital Bits spoke with Landau at a press event at Lightstorm Entertainment and directly asked him about the physical Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of James Cameron’s back catalogue – specifically citing “The Abyss,” “True Lies,” “Titanic” and “Avatar”.
Landau indicated that all four of those films are planned for release on 4K UHD and Blu-ray this year. There had been rumors this was happening since late last year, but this marks a proper official confirmation from someone who is connected.
With “Titanic” just having had a 3D re-release, the outlet says they have “good reason to believe” that film and the two “Avatar” movies could get 3D Blu-ray releases as well this year for those who still have working 3D TVs.
No more specific release dates for any of these titles, but as soon as they are announced we’ll be reporting on them.
