A24

Snagging the top prizes at the directing, producing and actors guilds along with two Golden Globes, there’s no question A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the clear frontrunner to dominate the Oscars next weekend.

It held true tonight as the movie swept the Film Independent Spirit Awards, taking out seven of its eight nominations including Best Picture. It also won best screenplay and best director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s work, along with a best editing award.

Acting categories are now combined gender-neutral categories at the Sprits, meaning only three acting awards were handed out and all went to ‘Everything’ cast members – Michelle Yeoh winning for Best Lead Performance, Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Performance, and Stephanie Hsu for Best Breakthrough Performance.

The other film winners were “Aftersun” for Best First Feature, “Joyland” for Best International Feature, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” for Best Documentary Feature, “Emily the Criminal” for Best First Screenplay, and “Tar” for Best Cinematography.

In more specialist award categories “Women Talking” took the Robert Altman Award, “The Cathedral” took the John Cassavetes Award, “Nanny” writer/director Nikyatu Jusu scored a ‘Someone to Watch’ award, and Reid Davenport’s “I Didn’t See You There” scored a ‘Truer Than Fiction’ award.

On the TV front, “The Bear” won Best New Scripted Series and Best Supporting Performance for Ayo Edebiri, Quinta Brunson won Best Lead Performance for “Abbott Elementary,” “Pachinko” took Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, “The Rehearsal” won Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series.
