Ted Lasso season 3 has a lot of storylines to balance, including Nate Shelley’s villain arc. Ted Lasso season 4 would help to alleviate this issue.

The villain for Ted Lasso season 3 proves why the show needs a season 4. Ted Lasso, the hit soccer comedy series from Apple TV+, has captivated audiences with its mix of humor and heart. The show, which follows the titular American college football coach as he takes over as manager of a Premier League soccer team, has become a smash hit for Apple’s streaming service thanks to its litany of relatable characters and ability to tackle big themes such as mental health and toxic masculinity with a light, deft touch.

Ted Lasso has become one of the most highly-acclaimed sitcoms in recent memory, with Ted Lasso season 1 the most nominated first-season comedy in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards. Ted Lasso season 3, however, has a villain problem that only a future season 4 could potentially overcome. No character highlights this more clearly than Nick Mohammed’s Nate, who was established as Ted Lasso season 3’s villain at the end of season 2.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Has A Lot Of Stories To Finish

Over the course of Ted Lasso season 2, Nathan “Nate the Great” Shelley shifted from an insecure, yet kindhearted, friend into an egotistical and toxic villain. The reveal that Nate switched sides to work with Rupert Mannion at West Ham set the stage for Ted Lasso season 3, with Nate having fully gray hair in season 2’s finale. However, this is only one of many storylines that will have to be wrapped up if Ted Lasso season 3 is the show’s final run. The only way to properly do justice to Nate’s storyline is for Ted Lasso season 4 to happen, giving the narrative more time.

In addition to Nate’s story, Ted Lasso season 3 will also see AFC Richmond return to the Premier League and attempt to “win the whole… thing.” Ted Lasso is sure to also continue its exploration of Ted’s mental state on top of new character arcs for the many teammates and crew that make up AFC Richmond. All of these potential storylines could mean Ted Lasso season 3 has too much on its plate, especially if the rumor that it will be the final season proves true. Another season of Ted Lasso could help to prevent season 3 becoming oversaturated.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Can Prevent Season 3 From Having Too Much To Do

A potential Ted Lasso season 4 could provide season 3 a focus it would otherwise lack. An extra season would allow Ted Lasso season 3 to purely focus on the consequences of Nate moving to West Ham and the ensuing rivalry between the two teams as they battle for the Premier League trophy. Even if AFC Richmond wins the ultimate prize in Ted Lasso season 3, another potential season could see the team compete in the more prestigious Champions League, trying to continue their winning streak while dealing with various individual and team dilemmas.

Aside from the upcoming Premier League rivalry and Nate cruelly betraying Ted, Ted Lasso season 3 must also conclude the various romantic storylines if it is indeed the final season. The Ted Lasso season 2 finale left Keeley and Roy’s relationship up in the air, for example. Sam also chose to stay with AFC Richmond, meaning his romantic relationship with club owner Rebecca could throw a spanner in the works also. Whether Ted Lasso season 3 is indeed the final whistle, Nate becoming a villain is a brilliant creative decision that allows the show to continue covering themes of toxic masculinity and, possibly, redemption deep into extra time.
