Actress Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie on HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game “The Last of Us,” recently spoke about their excitement for a second season of the series.

Following rave reviews over the show’s third episode, and increasing ratings with each episode thus far, the show was unsurprisingly renewed for a second season which is expected to be based on “The Last of Us Part II” game.

That game is a much darker, more structurally interesting and emotionally devastating beast than its predecessor, doubling down on harder, complicated morality choices that define the ending of the first game and haven’t really come into play in the HBO series as yet.

Ramsey appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast this week and explains that while they haven’t played the game, they have watched the online video edits of the second game’s narrative and are excited to play out “the Ellie and Dina story” from the second title:

“Also, the complexity of her relationship with Joel and how that gets decidedly… more complex. I’m looking forward to that, and the violence that ensues is thrilling in a way. To get to explore that in a really safe environment would be cool but I am nervous about it, too. I know what happens in the second game, and I’m nervous about [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. That’s gonna be really sad.”

The show’s executive producer Craig Mazin also revealed that there is an emotionally rough Joel (Pedro Pascal) flashback coming up. He tells TV Line that while the Frank & Bill flashbacks are by far the longest of the series, there are more coming including the Joel one:

I don’t think we’re going to go backwards at length like that [Bill & Frank], but Joel’s past is what informs his future. There’s a particular moment I’m thinking of that also just [hits] me so hard… Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Joel has so much soul and humanity to it, and vulnerability, especially when Joel is alone. You know? He has to be a tough guy around everybody, but when he’s alone, that’s when you see all that soul.”

The recent third episode has seen itself review bombed on IMDb with a surge of 1/10 reviews highly disproportionate as compared to the previous episodes. Whilst some reactions offered some genuine criticism over how the episode departs significantly from the Bill’s Camp level of the game, others… not so much.

In the wake of the episode, a trailer for tomorrow night’s fourth episode was posted and shows off a glimpse of Melanie Lynskey’s performance as ruthless Kansas City revolutionary movement leader Kathleen – a new character created for the series.

When one Twitter user bafflingly dubbed the trailer “more homosexual agenda pushing” simply for the inclusion of the “Yellowjackets” star, social media had a field day along with Lynskey herself who amusingly tweeted: “OMG yes let me push that homosexual agenda just by showing up! An honour!.”
