How Big Will The Super Mario Bros. Movie Be?

The Super Mario Bros Movie

With every passing day, the hype surrounding the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie seems to increase. That is for good reason, as the original trailer for the film featured ample classic Mario characters and imagery, which has led to even more big reveals in recent weeks, including that of Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong voice. The upcoming release has the potential to be one of the biggest movies of 2023, putting it into competition with many of the year’s other big film releases. Ironically, the franchise’s continued cultural relevance was made clear through the backlash the film received after the confirmation of Chris Pratt’s casting.

Chris Pratt may have the two biggest movies of the year with the Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, but the Marvel star’s casting as Mario has mostly overshadowed the animated movie’s development. Despite that, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives in the lead-up to its release, as the rest of the film and the footage shown are very exciting. The change of making Princess Peach into an action heroine, as well as the return of iconic Mario Kart map Rainbow Road, have been met with much fanfare.

The film also appears dedicated to the source material for the most part, and it will bring iconic Mario settings and characters to life with Illumination working on the film and two experienced animated directors at the helm. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will hit theaters on April 7, and the sky is the limit for how well it could perform both domestically and overseas due to the property’s wide-reaching popularity.
