“Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro was in good spirits this past week as he appeared at a U.K. theatrical screening of his stop-motion animated feature “Pinocchio”.

Though the film has already been available worldwide on Netflix for weeks now, Del Toro was on hand to discuss his adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s fairy tale, a film that is in contention for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards.

During the talk, he said he wants to keep pushing the animation medium into “areas that demonstrate its capacity” and away from the kid’s table where Hollywood often tries to pigeonhole it.

Asked by The Telegraph if he had an appetite to make another stop-motion film soon, he says most certainly – and already has a project lined-up in very early development:

“The next stop-motion film I’m making is an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant, which I’m currently co-writing with Dennis Kelly [the writer of “Matilda: The Musical”], and we start the design process in two months. I’m shooting a live-action feature first. But in the meantime, we’re developing a look-book, and in about two years if everything goes well, we’ll start production.”

The talk comes several months after Del Toro revealed that he had spoken to VFX and stop-motion legend Phil Tippett about doing a potential adaptation of Del Toro’s passion project – the H.P. Lovecraft novella “At the Mountains of Madness”.
