Whilst the upcoming “Scream VI” marks a return of the creative team and key cast from the fifth film, this one takes a quite different approach that mostly ditches the meta take on legacy sequels of the fifth movie.

The result is a film that’s decidedly darker, less self-referential and tries some things the series hasn’t really done before – and not just the change of setting from the sleepy town of Woodsboro to the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The two trailers so far have shown the shift in tone, with the Ghostface killer of this outing having no issue striking out in public and using methods he previously hasn’t used before (including a shotgun).

Speaking with Total Film ahead of the movie’s release, the film’s directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin opened up about the new entry and how Ghostface this time out will be a much more bold, violent and lethal figure than in entries past. Bettinelli-Olpin says:

“We wanted to make this really different, while still having all the stuff you love. Having a bolder, more brazen Ghostface was a big part of that.”

Gillett says another big change to this entry is a faster pace than a typical “Scream” movie thanks to less stopping to converse about other movies by the characters:

“It really moves like it’s on rocket fuel. You sit down, it starts, and the movie is just a ride. You get off two hours later, and you feel like you haven’t taken a breath.

This starts, and it just goes. So there aren’t really these large pockets to talk about other movies. It, of course, has all of the fun nods and meta-commentary. But we really loved how accelerated this story is. It felt like a reflection of how accelerated the process of making it was.”

The new film sees the four survivors of the last movie – Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) – start a fresh chapter in New York, only to find it even less safe than what they left behind.

Dermot Mulroney, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra and Henry Czerny also star in “Scream VI” which opens in cinemas on March 10th.
