“Velma” Backlash Draws Major Eyeballs


There is no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to TV ratings. HBO Max’s adult animated series “Velma,” a prequel reimagining of “Scooby-Doo” from the perspective of Velma Dinkley, has been on the receiving end of a lot of online bashing.

Critics have been very tepid on it, and audience polls would suggest people outright loathe the series – with a 6% approval rating from nearly 10,000 user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Its 1.3/10 score from over 50,000 ratings on IMDb would seem to concur – that’s reportedly the worst score ever for an animated series on the site.

But what about the actual viewership? The Wrap reports that in a weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics, it has been revealed “Velma” saw an astonishing 127% increase in demand from its launch period last week. It came in second place on this week’s ranking of the most in-demand new shows.

The data takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagements. The data reveals the demand level for “Velma” sits at 37.3x higher than the average series.

That’s behind only the 41.2x above average of the still performing strongly “Wednesday” on Netflix, and just ahead of “The Last of Us” with 36.3x.

The latter saw a not as substantial but still impressive 57% increase in demand from last week, but as it’s a weekly release of episodes, the show’s binge-watch numbers haven’t really begun to be added just yet. All three shows rank well above fourth place positioned “Tulsa King” at 27.0x.
