Further details about Jeremy Renner’s accident on New Year’s Day have emerged and reveal the Marvel star was trying to stop his snow-removal tractor from hitting his nephew before Renner was pulled under it and crushed.
CNN obtained a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report filed on Friday through a public records request which reveals the parking brake of the PistenBully snow groomer wasn’t engaged and would’ve stopped the vehicle.
According to the report: “The machine began sliding, causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake. Although the PistenBully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection, that the parking brake would keep the PistenBully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the PistenBully to avoid injury to [his nephew], he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”
The report also indicates that the brake light wasn’t working and “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident.” Renner had been using the plow to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow.
Renner’s nephew was able to help Renner before he was airlifted to the hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks. 52-year-old Renner is said to have broken more than 30 bones in the incident and was being treated in the intensive care unit.
Following two surgeries, the actor is now back at home and has begun a long road to recovery that could take up to two years.
