Actor/filmmaker Ethan Hawke has enlisted acting veterans Laura Linney, Vincent D’Onofrio, Steve Zahn and Alessandro Nivola to join a biopic of author Flannery O’Connor titled “Wildcat”.
In addition, Philip Ettinger (“First Reformed”), Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”), Cooper Hoffman (“Licorice Pizza”) and Willa Fitzgerald (“Reacher”) have joined the film which has been shooting for two weeks in Louisville, Kentucky. Hawke is directing, producing an co-writing with Shelby Gaines.
Ethan’s daughter and “Stranger Things” breakout Maya Hawke stars as O’Connor as she struggles to publish her first novel. A devout Catholic from Georgia, O’Connor was invited to the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
She was famed for essentially inventing the sub-genre ‘Southern Gothic’ which boasted a dark tone and dark humor as it told offbeat stories about the American South and various grotesque characters who move through it – all with a distinct lack of sentimentality. Issues of disability and race also come heavily into play in her works.
Her most famous works were her short story collections “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” along with the novel “Wise Blood”. Her posthumously compiled Complete Stories won the 1972 U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and has been the subject of enduring praise.
She was also plagued by lupus for much of her life and died at 39. Ryan Hawke, Joe Goodman, Cory Pyke, Kevin Downes, Jon Erwin and Daryl Lefever produce.
