“Black Panther” filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media is teaming with Onyx Collective on a one-hour scripted Hulu drama series about the Queen of Sheba titled, appropriately enough, “Sheba”.

The project is being co-created and written by Chantelle Wells, who produced Marvel’s upcoming “Echo” series and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets”. Also co-creating is Azie Tesfai, best known for her on-screen roles such as Kelly Olsen in “Supergirl” and as Det. Nadine Hanson in “Jane The Virgin”.

The story explores the rise to power of the first queen on the continent of Africa as she seeks to unite the nation we now know as Ethiopia – making it one of the richest, most formidable kingdoms in the world.

Inspired by true events, we follow Makeda in a world of danger, deceit and political intrigue as she is forced to step into a role that no one, including her, ever imagined. Wells, Tesfai, Coogler, Kalia King, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler all executive produce.

That’s not all though as Onyx Collective have also acquired the currently untitled sophomore documentary feature from music artist and filmmaker Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson following his Oscar-winning first feature “Summer of Soul”.

The doco examines the life and legacy of groundbreaking musicians Sly and the Family Stone. Questlove will direct and executive produce alongside Common, Shawn Gee, Zarah Zohlman, Derek Dudley, Shelby Stone and Ron Weisner.

The projects were announced Saturday during Onyx Collective’s panel at the Sundance Film Festival.
