The trailer for the third season of Lucasfilm’s “The Mandalorian” pulled in a record 83.5 million views in the first 24 hours after its premiere during the NFL wild-card playoff game on Monday night.
That’s easily the best trailer debut for a “Star Wars” Disney+ series, according to the studio. Previously the highest debut was for an “Obi Wan-Kenobi” trailer which pulled in roughly 58 million views in its first 24-hour period.
In addition, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a single shot edit made to the version of the trailer residing on the U.S. version of the Disney+ service.
That trailer version removes the date tag, as seen in the YouTube version. It replaces it with a shot of what appears to be Coruscant and a junkyard of around six Imperial Star Destroyers in rough condition. The shot reportedly occurs at the 1:02 mark in the Disney+ version of the trailer.
Created by Jon Favreau, “The Mandalorian” launched on Disney+ in November 2019 and quickly became the streamer’s flagship series. A second season followed in late 2020, followed by the spin-off “The Book of Boba Fett” at the end of 2021/early 2022.
In the third season, The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together. The cast also includes Katee Sackhoff, Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Emily Swallow and Giancarlo Esposito.
Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey and Bryce Dallas Howard direct episodes of the new run, which sees Jon Favreau again serving as showrunner and executive producing alongside Dave Filoni, Famuyiwa, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson.
The third season of “The Mandalorian” debuts on March 1st.
