Fiercely independent and prolific producer Edward R. Pressman reportedly passed away yesterday in a hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Annie McEncroe Pressman, and his son, Sam Pressman.
Pressman had a famed record for discovering new talent and working alongside similarly known filmmakers, including Oliver Stone, Werner Herzog, Kathryn Bigelow, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Brian De Palma, Abel Ferrara, Terrence Malick, John Milius and Mary Harron.
He was also one of the first producers to adapt comic books as well as films based on video games and toys. As a producer and executive producer, he worked on over ninety films in his time, including the various entries in the “Conan the Barbarian,” “The Crow,” “Bad Lieutenant” and “Wall Street” franchises.
He also worked on “American Psycho,” “Das Boot,” “Badlands,” “Street Fighter,” “Phantom of the Paradise,” “Reversal of Fortune,” “Blue Steel,” “Masters of the Universe,” “Crime Wave,” “Paradise Alley,” “Hoffa,” “City Hall,” “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” “Judge Dredd,” “The Cooler,” “Thank You for Smoking” and “Fur” among many others.
He was a hard worker, his son Sam saying in a statement: “He was working up until the last moment [and] insisted on speaking with London partners on the night before his passing. We have a lot of work to do to honor him and bring to fruition the many projects he put himself into.”
His last film will be “The Crow” reboot starring Bill Skarsgard, Danny Huston, and FKA Twigs, which wrapped filming in October last year.
