NHK and MAPPA have announced that “Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3” will be split into two further parts, with the first half of ‘Final Arc’ set to air on March 3rd and the second half to premiere later in 2023.
The final season’s synopsis reads: “Four years after the Survey Corps reached the shore beyond the walls, Falco Grice and Gabi Braun are among Marley’s ‘Warrior Candidates’ who wish to inherit the power of the titans.
After emerging victorious in a hard-fought war, they continue their military training when Marley shifts its focus on invading Paradis once again. Nevertheless, in the midst of this announcement, Reiner has an unexpected encounter with a critical person from his past … one who brings along terror and chaos.”
A new trailer was also released as part of the announcement and can be viewed here. The show has had an interesting release strategy over the years. The first season of 25 episodes aired in 2013, followed by a second season in 2017 of 12 episodes.
Then it starts to get complicated. A third season consisted of two parts – a 12-episode run in 2018 and a 10-episode run in 2019. A fourth season consisted of a 16-episode first part in 2020, and a 12-episode second part in 2022. Now we’re effectively getting a third part – part one and a third part – part two, but the episode number of either block is unknown at this time.
Beginning in 2009 and written by Hajime Isayama, the property became one of the best-selling manga series of all time. It sold over 100 million volumes in print worldwide, with the final issue released in April 2021. The anime aims to adapt the entire saga.
