The first photo has been released of “Industry” star Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s long-gestating biopic “Back To Black” at Studiocanal and Focus Features.
The film will follow Winehouse’s rise to fame in London in the early 2000s, when she and Taylor-Johnson first met and became friends along Camden’s High Street scene, where Taylor-Johnson worked for a period and saw Winehouse perform.
Winehouse passed away in 2011, but quickly became one of the most popular recording artists in recent history, selling over 30 million records worldwide and generating over 80 million streams per month. Her “Back to Black” album became her signature work along with the immensely popular song “Rehab”.
Taylor-Johnson directs from a script by Matt Greenhalgh (“Nowhere Boy,” “Control”) and the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing, and The Amy Winehouse Estate.
Producer Alison Owen says in a statement: “Amy Winehouse is the greatest musical talent of the 21st century so far. But like so many female icons, the tragedy of her death has seemed to obscure the triumph of her talent…the fun of the noughties, the craziness of Camden, her youth and brilliance – we want to reclaim that for her, with this film.”
The film is set to enter production this coming Monday, January 16th in London. Abela has a small role in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie in July.
