New set photos are out from “Road House,” Amazon Prime Video’s reimagined and modern twist on the 1989 cult classic. The project was shot in the back half of last year in the Dominican Republic starting in August.
Jake Gyllenhaal and UFC champion Conor McGregor, in his first screen role, star in the film that hails from “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Go” director Doug Liman.
Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter who takes on a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys. However, he soon discovers that everything is not as it seems in this tropical paradise.
Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Lukas Gage, JD Pardo, Joaquim de Almeida, Darren Barnet, Kevin Carroll, Travis Van Winkle, Hannah Love Lanier and Gbemisola Ikumelo co-star. Joel Silver, who produced the original, returns for the new take.
Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch and Sam Elliott starred in the original film, which was set in Missouri where Swayze’s professional ‘cooler’ (bouncer) is hired to work at the newly refurbished roadside bar, the Double Deuce, and ends up having to protect a small town from a corrupt businessman (Ben Gazzara).
The film was famed for various elements, from Sam Elliott’s iconic hairstyle to a scene involving a throat being ripped out bare-handed and just the overall macho wackiness. Though critics were down on the film at the time, it has become something of a cult hit in the years since.
