Hot on the heels of its Golden Globe wins for best comedy series and two acting honors, “Abbott Elementary” has been renewed for a third season by ABC. It marks the first series pickup for 2023-24 at ABC.

The series has been not just an awards show and critical darling, its also a strong performer for the network – the second season is averaging 9.1 million viewers and a 3.58 rating in multi-platform figures per episode – up 13% overall and 31% in the key demo from last season.

Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and Wiliam Stanford Davis star in the series about public school teachers. Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Randall Einhorn executive produce.

Meanwhile, The CW has also ordered its first series for the 2023-24 season with the renewal of its drama “All American” for a sixth season.

The pickup marks the first since local TV giant Nexstar acquired a 75% stake in The CW and the network’s new entertainment president Brad Schwartz.

“All American” consistently pulls in good ratings for the network, and this season is the top show on The CW among adults 18-49 and fourth in total viewers. The network also says it had the largest cross-platform audience on The CW in the 2021-22 season.

Nexstar has committed to turning a profit with the network and so is looking for less expensive programming than what currently populates it, along with cutting back the slate of scripted originals that could drop to as low as just four or five on the air.
