The villain in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania can change the MCU forever, and has already been set up by Marvel’s previous releases. Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania marks the beginning of MCU Phase 5, and the third solo venture for Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, once again joined by Evangeline Lilly as Wasp. This time, however, Ant-Man has another companion in the form of daughter Cassie, who is now portrayed by Kathryn Newton after another MCU recast. Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania sees the entire Lang-Pym clan dragged into the Quantum Realm, where they meet arguably the most dangerous villain seen in the MCU thus far.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Ant-Man’s previous solo movie antagonists include Yellowjacket and Ghost, both of whom are confirmed to make MCU comebacks. The villain in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, however, will be a face Scott Lang has never encountered before – albeit not a character entirely unfamiliar to the MCU. In Loki, Tom Hiddleston’s titular trickster met He Who Remains. This scientist from the future learned how to cross through the multiverse only to find his variants were less benevolent than himself. He Who Remains locked these evil counterparts away, but the seal released when Sylvie killed him, and her actions lead directly to the villain in Ant-Man 3.

Kang The Conqueror Is Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’s Villain

Kang in Ant-Man 3

Taking main villain duties in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania is Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. Kang is one of the not-so-pleasant variants of He Who Remains, and although his existence was previously prevented by the Sacred Timeline, Sylvie’s actions have allowed Kang the Conqueror to respawn and wreak havoc across the MCU multiverse once again. Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania will likely elaborate on Kang’s live-action backstory, but the Marvel Comics character hails from the 31st century and discovers a method of time travel, allowing alternate Kangs to scatter throughout history. By utilizing technology from future eras, Kang seeks to conquer the entire Marvel timeline.

Based on Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania trailer footage, it appears that Jonathan Majors’ Kang needs Scott Lang’s knowledge and/or technology, either to make up for lost time after his enforced absence, or to escape the Quantum Realm. He initially offers Scott the years he lost with Cassie due to spending time in the Quantum Realm, but the pair evidently come to blows sooner or later, with Kang threatening all life unless Scott cooperates. Although Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania marks Kang’s MCU debut proper, the villain is guaranteed further credits, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty due in 2025.

Kang The Conqueror’s Powers Explained

Jonathan Majors as Kang in Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania

Somewhat unusually for such a formidable villain, Kang the Conqueror has no inherent superpowers in Marvel Comics, and that looks to be true in the MCU also. Kang possesses no inherited abilities like Thor, is not biologically augmented like Steve Rogers, and is not a mutant like Kamala Khan. Instead, Kang’s power comes predominantly from his incredible intellect as a 31st-century scientist, figuring out how to travel the MCU multiverse. Kang then exploits that genius-level knowledge to amass deadly technology from the far-future, which he wields to continue his domination of all reality. In MCU terms, Kang is what happens when a grumpy Tony Stark finds Doc Brown’s DeLorean.

The Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania trailer alludes toward several potential Kang the Conqueror abilities. Janet van Dyne claims that Kang can “rewrite existence and shatter timelines,” while one impressive trailer shot shows Jonathan Majors’ character firing off blue blasts from his hands. While it is possible that the MCU has rejigged Kang the Conqueror with proper superpowers, both of these Ant-Man 3 trailer clues could point toward Kang’s intelligence and technology instead. “Rewrite existence…” may mean Kang’s knowledge of traveling timelines and universes, while the blue blasts likely come from the villain’s outfit, which also features a blue visor that mimics Kang’s original comic design.

Is MODOK Also A Villain In Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania?

MODOK battles Ant-Man in Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania

While Kang the Conqueror certainly looks to be the primary villain in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, another familiar Marvel baddie is confirmed by trailer footage. MODOK is portrayed by Corey Stoll, who previously appeared as Yellowjacket in the 2015 Ant-Man movie. MODOK appears to be working for, or is allied with, Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, and this makes sense. Yellowjacket was sent to the Quantum Realm by Scott Lang, and being crushed by his own suit could explain the transformation into a big floating face. Yellowjacket would almost certainly want revenge on the man responsible, and helping Kang target Ant-Man could be how he gets it.

Although MODOK is a respected Marvel villain in his own right, he lacks Kang’s fearsome reputation. Indeed, MODOK’s unusual appearance has regularly resulted in varying degrees of goofiness, most recently with the MODOK TV show starring Patton Oswalt. Given his checkered history with Ant-Man and lack of morality in the comics, MCU MODOK is very likely a villain in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, but a secondary enemy underneath Kang the Conqueror – like Crossbones under Hydra or the Black Order under Thanos. The dastardly duo of Kang the Conqueror and MODOK in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania could prove to be one of the MCU’s most dangerous villain pairings yet.
