The Pink Ladies of Rydell High come together for the first time in the latest trailer for Paramount+’s upcoming Grease prequel series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. The upcoming show is inspired by Randal Kleiser’s iconic 1978 musical romantic comedy that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as two love-struck students of Rydell High School in 1958. Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies takes place before the events of the hit musical in 1954, exploring the formation of the Pink Ladies before T-Bird Danny Zuko (Travolta) and new student Sandy Olsson (Newton-John) had their fateful summer together.
Released by Paramount+ on YouTube, the first official teaser trailer for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies follows previously released teaser images and introduces audiences to a new class of Rydell High students, set to an updated rendition of the original musical’s title song “Grease”.
The trailer gives viewers a brief introduction to central characters Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), and Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso), as they break free of society’s expectations and set out to change Rydell High forever. The teaser also offers a glimpse at the show’s musical numbers, teasing sequences set at pep rallies and in the school’s shop class.
Everything We Know About Rise of the Pink Ladies
Helmed by Minx and Atypical‘s Annabel Oakes, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies was ordered by Paramount+ for a ten-episode run in July 2021 after an earlier incarnation of the series had begun development at HBO Max titled Rydell High. With the property returned to Paramount, the cast was announced in January 2022, with Fukuhara, Davila, Wells, and Notartomaso’s involvement being confirmed alongside Shanel Bailey, Johnathan Nieves, Madison Thompson, and Maxwell Whittington-Cooper. Jackie Hoffman also joined the cast as Principal McGee; the series will show her time as vice principal, well ahead of her appearance in Grease, where she was portrayed by Eve Arden.
In a previously released synopsis, details of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies‘ story were revealed, teasing the world of Rydell High before the Pink Ladies donned their recognizable jackets. Centered on the four girls, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is set in 1954 before rock ‘n roll swept over the US and took the country’s youth by storm. It sees the characters become fed up with living with the expectations of the time, sparking change that soon spreads throughout their classes. While Danny’s generation of T-Birds have yet to establish themselves as Rydell’s residential greaser gang, leather jackets emblazoned with the group’s title can be seen in the Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies teaser, hinting at the oncoming trends and the rise of the original film’s other rebellious group.
Grease is a highly-influential musical hit that remains beloved to this day, not only by having a number of memorable tracks, but also a whole world of iconography attached to it, including the Pink Ladies’ jackets. As such, the group’s origin is a perfect way to expand the world, and while many of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies‘ cast are characters new to the property’s 40+ year history, the new stories are a perfect opportunity for younger audiences to learn about the classic musical. Between an all-new cast and songs that hope to capture the original film’s charm, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is set to take Rydell High and audiences by storm when it premieres on Paramount+ on April 6.
