The Evil Dead Rise trailer has already proven that the Evil Dead franchise reboot will steer clear of one of the silliest scenes in 2013’s remake.

While the upcoming reboot Evil Dead Rise won’t be abandoning most elements of the Evil Dead franchise, the movie’s trailer does imply that it will skip one of the more onerous clichés featured in 2013’s earlier re-imagining of the series. The Evil Dead movies have always had a strange relationship with the horror genre. On the one hand, director Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead is a relentlessly dark, gory tour de force, and its 2013 reboot Evil Dead is no less grim and intense, but on the other, every movie in the series (and particularly Raimi’s sequels) feature moments of dark comic relief.

Fortunately, the trailer for Evil Dead Rise has already proven that the upcoming sequel won’t be as over-the-top and silly as the franchise’s canceled television spinoff Ash Vs Evil Dead. Although the Necronomicon does appear in the Evil Dead Rise trailer, this time, the infamous tome is a mildly gnarly-looking book with creepy illustrations. It is not the ludicrously foreboding book seen in 2013’s Evil Dead, which was hidden, wrapped in multiple garbage bags, protected by barbed wire, and covered with scrawled demands that no one should ever read it under any circumstances. The fact that Evil Dead Rise avoided this cliché bodes well for the movie’s tone.

The Necronomicon in Evil Dead Rise

The Necronomicon seen in Evil Dead Rise’s trailer looks like a book that might exist in the real world and, as such, it feels believable for the movie’s teen protagonists to have picked up the creepy volume despite its unsettling artwork. As an Evil Dead reboot, Evil Dead Rise is already aiming for a more grounded tone than its predecessor, 2013’s Evil Dead, which in turn took itself more seriously than the original 1980 movie of the same name. This is a wise choice as, without Bruce Campbell’s iconic Ash Williams, Evil Dead Rise would have struggled to recapture the cartoony/creepy/comedic tonal balance of Raimi’s original movies.

What This Proves About Evil Dead Rises

Necronomicon from Below in Evil Dead Rise

The fact that the movie’s Necronomicon is more understated than that of the 2013 reboot proves the same thing that most of the Evil Dead Rise trailer proves. Namely, that Evil Dead Rise is not going to be a campy thrill ride like the original movies, and won’t even include the reboot’s over-the-top elements. Rather than playing up its comic elements and embracing 80s nostalgia, Evil Dead Rise is aiming for an even more realistic tone than the 2013 reboot. This is an ambitious decision, but it is a wise one for a movie that will need to stand out in a critically acclaimed series.

Evil Dead Rise has a better chance of winning over viewers if the reboot steers clear of goofy clichés and takes itself seriously in terms of tone. Replacing the cartoonishly threatening Necronomicon with a slightly less chilling book makes it clear that Evil Dead Rise won’t be leaning into the silliness of its premise, and this creative choice should dissuade fans and critics from comparing the movie to earlier outings in the series. It won’t be easy for Evil Dead Rise to recreate the impact that the original Evil Dead movies had on viewers upon their release, but the movie’s decision to take a new tonal direction should work in its favor.
