With its PG-13 rating allowing for a large teenage contingent to check it out, “M3GAN” slayed at the box-office this weekend – coming in well ahead of projections with $30 million domestically.
We do know that the film wasn’t shot with a rating in mind and that whilst they did make a few changes to turn it into a PG-13 from an R, those involved have said that the changes they made were crafted to be suggestive and even more horrific.
Now, the film’s screenwriter Akela Cooper opened up to The Los Angeles Times about writing the script and revealed that it in written form at least, the original work much gorier than what was shown.
Cooper wrote James Wan’s film “Malignant” which played up being a dark horror spooker before turning into a ridiculously fun, ultraviolent gonzo tribute to the Giallo subgenre.
With “M3GAN,” her original work was quite gory, with the shot film less than that and then re-edited to be less gory again to get the PG-13 rating. She adds that an unrated version is planned at some point:
“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point. I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”
Cooper adds that M3GAN’s body count didn’t have “Malignant” style scale massacres, however:
“She did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters whom James [Wan] was like, ‘I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.’ I was merciless, but again, that is me. My humor is extremely dark.”
Cooper also says she has seen a shift from studio executives swaying away from gory films that are also funny and is happy to be a part of “bringing back fun horror that doesn’t take itself so seriously”. She adds she’s reading about more horror movies based on “wild, out-there ideas” that are in the works.
One other thing that would also appear to be in the works is “M3GAN 2” with Deadline reporting that a sequel is already in early development according to their sources as of this past Friday.
