Further details came to light earlier this week in a Variety article about Dwayne Johnson’s rejected plans for the future of the DC Universe on screen.
That report revealed Johnson had pitched a multiyear plan directly to new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav that would have led to his Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s Superman characters facing off.
The move is said to have ruffled feathers internally and ultimately only really resulted in Cavill’s return for a brief cameo at the end of “Black Adam”. Zaslav hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to take over DC Studios, and any plans for a “Black Adam” sequel or Cavill’s Superman return were scrapped.
That would seem to be the end of Johnson’s days with DC Studios for now, and his many-year push to bring “Black Adam” to the big screen. He got his wish, but the film the film’s poor critical performance and box-office disappointment (mostly due to its costly budget) mean he can’t take it any further.
In a 90-second video posted on social media, Johnson hinted about the fallout between him and Warners over DC and how “having the guts to fail” is some advice he received that he feels “ties into this whole thing”.
He continues by saying that having the “guts to fail” is a more important quality than the desire to succeed and to become famous and that he’s happy that he still has that quality at his age – ‘guts over desire’ – as it allows him to take big swings.
The video has understandably drawn an interesting mix of reactions and questions about how much of this is down to fearlessness, and how much is to do with ego. Johnson’s post is vague enough to avoid directly addressing both the article and the performance of “Black Adam,” but the timing has drawn understandable links.
Johnson said last month that he James Gunn connected, and re-affirmed that “Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling” with the character if he were to come back, likely to be utilised in an ensemble movie as opposed to a standalone one.
The actor remains one of the biggest film stars out there and will next be seen in the Christmas-set action-adventure feature “Red One” alongside Chris Evans. That is targeting a release around Holiday 2023.
