The second round of pseudo-legendary Pokémon of Dragapult and Hydreigon are coming to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Tera Raids running from January 6th to January 9th. This event will feature 4 and 5-star raids with the two Pokémon of varying Tera Types. Both Pokémon are strong and strategically benefit trainers looking to get into competitive play. To tackle these raids quickly for amazing rewards, consider their main Dragon-type moves counters such as Fairy- and Fire-types.
Dragapult will be featured in Pokémon Violet, while Hydreigon will be featured in Pokémon Scarlet. With their similar primary typing being Dragon-type, Fairy- and Ice-type Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet will be necessary to train up for battle. However, be advised that both Pokémon learn moves that can counter them, such as Flash Cannon on Hydreigon and Fire Blast on Dragapult. Additionally, the more times a trainer’s Pokémon faints during battle determines how much time is taken off the counter.
Be Cautious of Dragapult and Hydreigon’s Status Moves
In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Dragapult and Hydreigon have a large set of moves that trainers should look out for. To hinder its opponents, Dragapult was given the move Will-O-Wisp, burning non-Fire-type Pokémon, which can be detrimental to physical attackers such as Azumarill, even with the best raid builds. Likewise, Hydreigon can paralyze opponents with Thunder Wave making it hard for trainers to build momentum to damage it without fainting too early on. Therefore, as a recommendation in both cases, Gholdengo‘s ability, Good As Gold, makes it immune to these moves or giving a selected Pokémon a Lum Berry increases a trainer’s chance of success.
Recommended Pokémon Builds
A few known raid-ready Pokémon builds are recommended to defeat Dragapult and Hydreigon quickly. For Dragapult, an Iron Hands build is easy to use since this Pokémon can tank physical attacks and is immune to Dragapult’s Ghost-type STAB move Phantom Force. Adding Booster Energy to Iron Hands raises its Attack stat, helping Iron Hands OHKO Dragapult. For Hydreigon, consider using a Sylveon Tera Raid build in Scarlet and Violet because of its high Special Defense and immunity to Draco Meteor, Hydreigon’s signature move. Held items such as a Babiri Berry or Leftovers can be given to Sylveon to maintain its health and help take down Hydreigon quicker.
Solo The Pseudo-Legendary Raids
Dragapult and Hydreigon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can be soloed with the correct set-up and type advantages. To break down a general raid, trainers should consider early raiding Pokémon, which according to Austin John Plays, are: Koraidon and Miraidon, due to coverage when needing a physical attacker or special attacker. On the first turn, trainers will always receive one Defensive Buff from their NPCs; use a set-up move like Swords Dance or Calm Mind to get multiple stat boosts this turn. For the second turn, trainers should continue buffing themselves or “debuff” the opposing Pokémon. In the case of using a Belly Drum Pokémon like an Iron Hands build or Charizard, consider using a Heal Buff the next turn to gain back some health. Finally, on the third turn, unleash an all-out maxed attack which varies depending on what Tera Type the Dragapult or Hydreigon is.
