After playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel-Netflix series “Daredevil” for three seasons, British actor Charlie Cox is set to reprise the role for the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again”.
Cox has already given us a glimpse of his character’s return in the likes of his “Spider-Man: No Way Home” cameo and his guest appearances on “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” where in both cases, the tone was decidedly lighter than the gritty and dark Netflix series.
The other week he said he was going to explore another version of the character and be less self-serious than his Netflix counterpart: “This has to be a reincarnation. It has to be different. Otherwise, why are we doing it?”. At the time, he added: “my opinion is this character works best when he is geared towards a slightly more mature audience”
Now a few weeks on, Cox tells iNews that it’s still going to be very much the same character as the Netflix series, but just one that is going through another part of his life:
“I don’t think it’s a different character. I just think it’s maybe a different period of his life. I don’t think my interpretation will change – they hired the same actor. We’re saying this is a whole new… era, or variant? I haven’t read the scripts, so I don’t know. But, like, it’s part of the multiverse? The only way I’ll change is if, tonally, the show is very different. I don’t think anyone should read into the name as to the kind of stories that we’re going to tell.”
Cox has also made it no secret that if he could get Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters to show up on his new series, he would – repaying the favour of his appearance in her show. He tells Metro UK:
“I’ve made it no secret that I’m a huge fan of Tatiana’s, and the fun we had on She-Hulk was some of the best fun I’ve had as that character. I thought she was amazing as Jennifer Walters, and I would be a huge… certainly an advocate of her showing up in our show if she’s free and available and willing and all of those things. So I would love for that to happen. I have no idea if that is possible.”
Vincent D’Onofrio returns to reprise his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the series, which also stars Michael Gandolfini, Sandrine Holt, and Margarita Levieva. “Daredevil: Born Again” hails from head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord (“Covert Affairs”) and will shoot throughout almost all of this year starting in February ahead of a Spring 2024 release.
