Late-night talk show host James Corden has revealed that he auditioned to play the hobbit Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films.
Appearing on an episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast on Tuesday, Corden says: “everyone, every single person in London” auditioned for the films including himself.
Corden reveals in the segment he and two friends went in to audition, with all three landing callbacks to take place the next day:
“I auditioned for Samwise…and I was doing it… I was doing the accent and everything. Then we got called back the next day, and then none of us got called back after that.”
The role of Samwise, best friend to Elijah Wood’s heroic hobbit, Frodo Baggins, ultimately went to Oscar nominee Sean Astin. Asked how he feels about the Middle Earth films, he says: “I enjoyed it until the last one, and then I was like, ‘Okay, I think I’ve seen this now.’”.
Corden announced back in April that he’ll exit “The Late Late Show” next spring.
