At the end of the world in Marvel Comics, Namor the Sub-Mariner must finally contend with his dark legacy of brutality and violence.

Warning: contains spoilers for Namor: The Conquered Shore #3!For perhaps the first time ever, Namor the Sub-Mariner is contending with his brutal legacy. In the current Namor the Sub-Mariner: Conquered Shores miniseries, readers have seen a more pensive Namor, one struggling to hold together a post-apocalyptic world and now, in issue three, Namor must contend with his legacy, one of brutality, violence and revenge. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

The issue opens with Namor and Luke Cage traveling to Doctor Doom’s castle; once there, Namor reveals that Doom manipulated him, taking advantage of Namor’s anger and outrage. At Doom’s castle, they discover a group of humans living there, overseen by the Frankenstein monster. The monster orders a squad of Doombots to attack the new arrivals. Namor and Cage elude them, and try to convince the monster to let them help the humans. Angered, Namor strikes the monster and in response, he pushes Namor off a cliff, taking himself with them. Just then, one of the human children slips and falls off the cliff. Namor stops fighting the monster and saves the child, convincing him and the humans that he means well. Later, a somber Namor realizes he was angry for so long and this aura of smug superiority masked a fear of “being lesser” and never knowing where he belonged. Namor tells the humans he does not blame them for initially not trusting him, as he has a reputation for betraying people on a whim. The issue is written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated by Pasqual Ferry, colored by Matt Hollingsworth and lettered by Joe Caramagna.

Since his introduction in comics’ Golden Age, Namor the Sub-Mariner has played fast and loose with the definition of “hero.” When he returned to the Silver Age, it was as a villain, leading the people of Atlantis in an invasion of New York City. Since that time, he has walked a fine line between hero and villain, at times a member of the Avengers and the X-Men. Now, in a post-apocalyptic world, one where the ocean levels have risen, Namor finds himself at a crossroads.

Namor Brutal Legacy

Namor is Finally Facing His Brutal Marvel History

At the end of the world, Namor is finally coming to terms with over a century of bad behavior, double crosses and frayed alliances. Namor’s reputation precedes him wherever he goes–in this case, Doom’s castle. There, the humans, who have heard nothing but horror stories about Namor, cower before him. Namor, for the first time in perhaps forever, is trying to make amends with people, with those that he betrayed and left for dead. Namor acknowledges, at last, that his anger stemmed from never fitting in on either the surface world or in Atlantis. Now, with Atlantis having achieved supremacy over the planet at long last, Namor is more contemplative, and eager to right past wrongs.

Hopefully, Namor’s epiphany was not too little too late, as his old ally the Human Torch is making his moves, assembling a robot army. If Namor could truly check his anger and rage, he could be a truly great hero and his actions in this miniseries prove it. Namor is finally contending with his dark legacy, and while it will not be easy, it will be worth it if humanity survives.
