The reasoning for Henry Cavill’s exit from “The Witcher” isn’t clear, despite some fan’s certainty it was due to his Superman return, whereas others are sure it was over creative differences with the direction “The Witcher” series was going.

Netflix, of course, famously has three-season contracts for many of its shows which is why so few go beyond that mark even though they should have (e.g. “Santa Clarita Diet,” “GLOW”).

Whilst we won’t know the truth for a while, those running the show promise Cavill’s departure will be with a bang – not a whimper. The former “Man of Steel” star has already shot all his third season scenes as Geralt of Rivia, with filming wrapping in September.

Series creator and showrunner Lauren Hissrich spoke with EW recently and says the third season is primarily an adaptation of “Time of Contempt,” one of the more action-heavy entries into Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series and one that serves as an appropriate send-off:

“What is so interesting is that season 3, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books. Obviously, we can’t do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, and huge reveals of a big bad. There’s so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books.

Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri. And to me, it’s the most heroic sendoff that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.”

Certainly, the change of actor from Cavill to Liam Hemsworth as Geralt sounds like it will come at a time that serves as a soft reboot of the series. Going by the standard gap of around eight months between the end of filming and the release of the season on the service, it’s likely Cavill’s final run will air around mid-2023.
