Not that long ago, actor Nicolas Cage revealed that one thing he hadn’t done and was desperate to do was a classic saddles and spurs movie Western.

Cut to this year, and he recently shot two of those back-to-back, with “Butcher’s Crossing” playing at the Toronto Film Festival back in September and “The Old Way” set for a theatrical release on January 6th via Saban Films.

With that dream done, are there any other genres Cage hasn’t dipped his toe in that he would like to tackle? Speaking to Empire recently for their 2023 preview issue, Cage was asked this very question, and it turns out there is – a movie musical.

Cage teased: “I haven’t done a musical yet. I’d like to try that. I’m not much of a singer. I did sing okay in Wild At Heart, I thought, but I’ve since blown my voice out singing ‘Purple Rain’ incorrectly in karaoke bars.”

Is there a specific musical role he has in mind? He says: “I think I’d make a good Pontius Pilate in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’” Barry Dennen played the Pontius Pilate role in the 1973 film adaptation, which remains mostly known for Carl Anderson’s strong performance as Judas Iscariot.

Cage has no shortage of work coming up. The actor will soon be seen playing Dracula in the dark comedy “Renfield,” and has at least three other films in post-production, including “The Retirement Plan,” “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Dream Scenario”. He’s currently filming “Sand and Stones”.
